48 hours with WordPress

by admin on July 7, 2008

I was a bit scared … my blog was hosted on Blogger which was like wearing a comfy slipper, but starting to show a few holes that I couldn’t easily work around and the weaknesses were really showing.

On the other hand WordPress was being touted heavily as the powerhouse of blogs and sounded just the job and I jumped right in and did it.

Well, do I regret it? No..No.. NO!! It looks like WordPress will serve me much better than Blogger.

There is a little discomfort from migrating .. where I had opted to link posts internally within the Blogger environment, the migration tool didn’t convert those. However, it did bring all posts, comments and embedded images across.

Furthermore, I am amazed at the variety and number of types of plugins and widgets that are available to work as real plug and play solutions to differentiate the blog.

As for skins (themes as they are called) .. the WordPress community has gone to town in sharing their skins (css & skinning is not my forte) and they can all be applied in your self-hosted WordPress site; contrast Blogger … where you are heavily restricted to using their classic templates if you choose to re-publish to your own domain.

I am sure that I still have a lot to learn bout WordPress, but far from regretting my move I am regretting that I never made the choice to start out on WordPress at the outset.

Unless you are on really basic hosting it seems likely that you will have PHP and MySQL ready installed on your server … making WordPress available to virtually everyone.
